If you have the space, such as a disused garage or basement, then it is cheap and easy to set up a home studio, with a few affordable lighting kits, painting all the walls in white, installing black curtains on rails and a couple of roll out paper slides.

Throw down some cheap carpet, and then invest in

  • a few umbrellas
  • 2 slides (black and white)
  • a couple of soft-boxes
  • some sliding black curtains
  • a bank of PAR 56s
  • a couple of loose single Par56s to use as snoots around the curtains

.. and you’ve got it as a starter for around $1000.

There are hundreds of websites on this topic – I have no intention of trying to articulate what others have already done – of the best, try “The Strobist – Lighting 101
