Story & Photos by Ant Ritz
INXS’s last show of their recent Australian Coast to Coast Tour (regional & east coast gigs) held at Penrith Panthers on 15th July 2012 was a brilliant show packed full of hits. It’s easy to forget just how many big hits they had had over the years, but the hits just kept coming all night.
There has been quite a long procession of lead singers since the death of Michael Hutchence in 1997. INXS’s previous front man, JD Fortune, was reportedly unceremoniously dumped. According to various news reports his sacking “…could have had something to do with his cocaine use.” Today, the lineup of INXS is Kirk Pengilly, Andrew Farriss, Tim Farrriss and John Farriss – and since 2011, Irishman Ciaran Gribbin is on lead vocals.
As far as a live performance goes, they seem to have found an excellent follow-up in Gribbin – energetic and charismatic on stage. That’s not to say Gribbin was the focal point all the time. In reality it was the Farriss brothers show. All the brothers plus Kirk Pengilly actively took centre stage at times.
All in all it was a brilliant show – the combination of great musicians, the hypnotic stage presence of the band, an excellent light show and the quality of great songs brought it all together to make it a night to remember.
If you ever get the chance to see INXS with their new front man – don’t miss it.
