The Bald Rock Hotel, Rozelle is an interesting little alehouse in Rozelle which features really good music most Saturday nights, Sunday evenings and other times. The food is great and the atmosphere sort of bluesy – there is no stage for the band and no matter what lights the entertainers bring with them, the sandstone walls cast a sallow light over everything and when mixed with coloured strobes creates some amazing colours and reflections. It either makes you look incredibly gorgeous or terribly sick.
Last Sunday evening was no exception – as Finn’s rhythm and blues band adds it’s own colourful musicians to the scene. More photos of Jim Finn’s R&B Band right here.
The Finn Band line up includes cool dude Paul Surany – surely one of the best guitarists on the Australian blues and roots landscape and of course the silver bullet, Jim Finn himself on drums and George Regartos on bass.
“We, that’s Paul Surany and I, are off to Europe in August to suss out opportunities for a tour in the near future” maybe later this year or early 2013.
What do you aim to achieve and how are going about that in foreign lands ?
“Well, we are going to have a look at Germany, England, Ireland .. possibly Spain and France .. we have some contacts and will build up a network of key people – it’s all about networking.”
I guess you are not just going to rock up and knock on doors outside the airport ?
“Of course not .. we’ll be going to the towns where we think there is a market and mature outlets for our sort of music … perhaps Frankfurt, Hamburg, Liverpool, London – maybe Newcastle .. the big cities. Then over to Dublin, maybe we’ll also have a look st Madrid, Barcelona, Paris”. We’ll be interested in the clubs and blues and roots venues. Paul and I want to talk to the booking agents and the bands themselves and see if we can design a tour for ourselves later that will fit in with our other commitments.”
So what other irons do you have in the fire here ?
“I am really excited about making another album – we have already created the material – we have 12 or so songs ready to put in the can.
What’s the news then on when, where, who and what ?
“Most of the material has been written by Paul and I .. and I’ve had a lot of support and contribution from my old pal from The Stray Dogs – that’s Paul Irving. We are going to record at a studio up at Shelley Beach, so really looking forward to that.”
